The American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery & Cutaneous Oncology (Mohs College) is the oldest professional organization of physicians who have advanced training and experience in the use of Mohs micrographic surgery. This specialized surgical procedure is an advanced treatment for skin cancer that combines the surgical removal of the cancer with simultaneous microscopic examination of the removed tissue. As such, the procedure offers the greatest potential for complete removal of the skin cancer, with a track record that includes the highest cure rate and lowest recurrence rate of all current treatment methods available.Because of its precise nature it minimizes the loss of healthy tissue, thereby minimizing the cosmetic impact of surgery.
The Mohs College is recognized as the first association requiring the advanced training of Mohs surgeons.
Members of the Mohs College are specially trained dermatologists and allied-field physicians who serve as surgeon, pathologist and reconstructive surgeon in the Mohs procedure. To be accepted as members, physicians must complete a residency in dermatology or a related field plus a one- or two-year fellowship program approved by the Mohs College that includes extensive training in pathology and reconstructive surgery.Currently, more than 60 training centers around the United States are recognized by the Mohs College for instruction in Mohs micrographic surgery.
Physicians who have completed a Mohs College-approved fellowship, by virtue of their rigorous training in oncologic surgery, pathology and reconstructive surgery, possess the skills and experience necessary to perform Mohs micrographic surgery at all levels of complexity. One of the major goals of the Mohs College is to ensure extensive training in Mohs surgery and thereby ensure ahigh quality of care for patients undergoing this procedure.
Mohs micrographic surgery was developed by Frederic E. Mohs, M.D., in the 1930s.He established the definitive elements of the procedure, which still set Mohs surgery apart from other treatments – the color-coded mapping of excised specimens and their thorough microscopic examination. For more than half a century, the surgical procedure has been refined and perfected.
The Mohs College was founded in 1967 by Dr. Mohs. The purpose of the organization includes:
Ÿpromoting the highest standards of patient care
Ÿmonitoring physician training programs to assurehigh standards of physician training in Mohs micrographic surgery
Ÿfurnishing continuing education
Ÿsafeguarding the standards of Mohs micrographic surgery.
